CO2 Lasers
Carbon dioxide lasers are among the most time-tested, light-based devices available to improve skin quality. Latest-generation technologies deliver ultra-short pulses of light energy to pinpoint specific skin concerns, leaving surrounding areas untouched. The heat that is generated provides additional benefits to the underlying skin by stimulating the production of firming collagen.

Fractionated CO2 Lasers
Continuous beams of light from selected devices are delivered to treatment areas in scanning patterns. These fractionated or fractional procedures divide the light into thousands of microscopic columns or channels, which are around ten times smaller than hair follicles. A fraction of the skin is treated at any given time. As the skin heals, collagen fills in the fractionated areas for a tighter, rejuvenated appearance.
BEFORE AND AFTER TREATMENT IMAGES OF
ACTUAL PATIENTS TREATED IN OUR PRACTICE
The patient is an 18-year-old male with acneiform scarring. He came to me to discuss various treatment options. I felt that with his condition’s severity, the best treatment option would be CO2 fractionated laser resurfacing.
He underwent one treatment of full-face fractionated resurfacing and received three passes. The first pass addressed the box-car scarring: I used a high-powered, square, 4mm spot size to target these deeper, punched-out scars. Next, I used medium-to-high-powered energy with a larger spot size to treat the general area of scarring and blend treatment areas. Lastly, I performed a lighter-energy setting to treat the entire face.
The after-photos are from one year later when he was home visiting from college and still noticing significant improvements every few months.
The patient is a 54-year-old female with acne scarring, photodamage, and wrinkles who came for a complete overhaul of her skin texture.
She underwent one treatment of full-face fractionated resurfacing and received three passes: the first was to address the acne scarring and the wrinkles. I used a high-powered, square, 4mm spot size to target these deeper, punched-out scars. I then switched to a linear delivery of laser energy to reach deep into wrinkles and promote remodeling. Next was a medium-to-high powered energy pass with a larger spot size to treat the general area of scarring/wrinkles and blend treatment areas. Lastly, I performed a lighter-energy setting to treat the entire face.
Results are from six months later. Most laser resurfacing continues to remodel for up to two years after treatment, so this is just the beginning!
DeepFX™ and ActiveFX™
Developed by leaders in aesthetic medicine, Lumenis, DeepFX™, and ActiveFX™ represent CO2 fractional laser skin resurfacing devices. When in the hands of skilled and experienced providers like Dr. Schroeder, they dramatically improve the appearance of deep folds and fine lines alike, as well as uneven tone and a leathery texture. While both technologies have received FDA clearance and are clinically validated by dozens of studies, each targets different skin layers. We can discuss your needs further during a consultation to determine the best approach for you.
What to expect
If these energy-based treatments are appropriate for you, a numbing anesthetic may be applied for enhanced comfort. As the beam of light passes over the surface of the treatment area, the resulting channels that are created not only trigger the production of collagen, but they also stimulate elastic fibers. Additionally, unaffected skin between the channels promotes faster healing and less downtime than comparable procedures and technologies.
So we’re using the Accu Pulse in combo mode, and if you go to aesthetics and then aesthetic treatment, and then it’s the combo mode right here. You go to treatment and then everything’s ready for you. We’re using a super pulse mode with a repeat at 0.3 seconds, 0.5, and it gives you the options of changing the shape and changing the size. So you can do different kinds of shapes. We’ll be using the square at six, the deep energy, we’re going to go up to 25 at 15% density, and the superficial will go up to one 20 at 40%.
As the laser is applied, you may feel some warmth. Depending on your needs and specific skin concerns, treatment can range from around 20 to 60 minutes. Right afterward, the treated skin may still feel a little warm, and the area may be somewhat red and swollen. These effects are temporary and may arise depending on the custom settings that were used for your treatment. Most Perfect Skin Dermatology patients get back to the activities they love in about a week. A daily skincare routine further promotes uneventful and healthy healing.
