Exploring Xeomin®: A Comprehensive Overview of the Botox® Alternative in 5 FAQs

Dr. Susan Schroeder at Perfect Skin MD offers a multitude of attractive products and therapies to help you achieve flawless skin. While many patients are familiar with Botox® Cosmetic and its ability to reduce wrinkles, there are also other options available to address frown lines.

What other treatment options are available at Perfect Skin MD besides Botox®?

In addition to Botox®, we offer another neurotoxin: Xeomin®. “Neurotoxin” refers to a substance that causes temporary relaxation of the muscles responsible for expression lines. In other words, it temporarily disrupts the nerve signals that activate muscle contractions. When targeted muscles remain relaxed, your skin stays smooth and free of furrows (wrinkles) caused by repeated facial expressions, like frowning and squinting.

How is Xeomin® administered?

Like Botox®, Xeomin® is injected precisely into the muscles on your face responsible for forehead lines, frown, lines, “crow’s feet” by your eyes, and even around your lips to address lip lines. Like the other neurotoxins, Xeomin® is formulated with the active ingredient, botulinum toxin type A. Once injected, this purified protein prevents the muscle contractions responsible for overlying wrinkles. Since Xeomin® is administered using very fine needles in a highly targeted manner, the procedure generally does not require numbing for comfort. For those who want it, topical anesthetic is available to minimize discomfort.

So, I won’t look “overdone”?

This depends upon your provider, and as long as you partner with a qualified and experienced provider, you won’t. A dermatologist and dermatologic surgeon, Dr. Schroeder has considerable specialized expertise in facial anatomy and physiology with extensive experience with Xeomin® to boot. Outcomes depend on the skill and expertise of the professional who administers Xeomin®. When Xeomin® is applied only to the specific muscles associated with your lines and furrows, results look natural. You can still freely and naturally express yourself with your face. Dr. Schroeder’s skill in administering Xeomin® also supports safety and minimizes the risks of potentially serious side effects.

When will I see the results?

Each patient’s experience is unique, but most people notice smoother skin within 5 to 7 days after the injection.” Results improve over time, with most patients experiencing optimal wrinkle-smoothing effects around 14 days after treatment. No neurotoxin provide permanent results. With Xeomin®, you should expect your face to remain frown-line-free for at least three months. Taking good care of your skin (and yourself!) can support longer-lasting results from Xeomin®.

What makes Xeomin® stand out from Botox®?

We always want to be cutting-edge when it comes to new products and innovations in aesthetic, medical, and surgical dermatology. All of these technologies and innovations have been carefully vetted by Dr. Schroeder. Xeomin®, for one, stands out from the “rest of the pack” as a highly purified form of botulinum toxin type A. Due to its unique processing, Xeomin® renders a “smart toxin” that is double-filtered.

In plain speak; the Xeomin® lacks two protein moieties that are present in Botox, Jeuveau, and Dysport. In some individuals, with repeated use, there is a resistance that builds up, causing the tox to break down much more quickly. Patients can develop antibodies to the proteins. What’s great about Xeomin® is that it lacks these proteins, so there’s nothing to develop antibodies against. Due to the highly purified nature of Xeomin®, it remains an effective treatment option even with repeat “maintenance” injections. So, patients can continue to enjoy the results that they have to come to expect from Xeomin®, appointment after appointment.
