Eczema Relief with Effective Treatment in Juno Beach, Florida

Eczema is a common childhood skin condition, but it doesn’t always resolve as we mature. In some instances, it doesn’t occur until adulthood. At any age, inflamed, dry, itchy skin that characterizes eczema can affect a person’s quality of life. Eczema relief is available at Perfect Skin in Juno Beach, Florida.

What is eczema?

Eczema encompasses a broad category of skin conditions and includes contact dermatitis (skin allergies) and seborrheic dermatitis (dandruff). Commonly, when people speak of eczema, they are referring to atopic dermatitis, which affects 18 million Americans. The exact causes of atopic dermatitis are not fully understood, but researchers know that the condition results as a malfunction of the immune system. There is also a strong link between allergic rhinitis (hay fever), asthma, and eczema.

Who is at risk?

Most patients develop this sensitive skin early in life. Eczema is especially common in infants, and if a young child has unusually dry or inflamed skin, he or she should be evaluated by a board-certified dermatologist. Most children will “outgrow” the condition, but about 40 percent of baby eczema cases persist into adulthood. Eczema on the hands may be aggravated by frequent washing or exposure to irritants. Eczema on the face may occur secondary to harsh elements, allergies, or sensitivity to products.

Atopic dermatitis (eczema) symptoms

  • Itching, sometimes unbearable.
  • Scaly or flaky skin.
  • Persistent skin dryness, often worse in winter.
  • Fissures (cracks) on the fingers, toes, and behind the ears.
  • Redness or visible rash.
  • Crusting, weeping, or open sores.
  • Increased susceptibility to infection (due to broken/cracked skin).
  • Thickening of skin (caused by excess rubbing or scratching).
