Most people know that dermatologists treat skin conditions, but we also specialize in hair and scalp concerns. At Perfect Skin Dermatology in Juno Beach, Florida, Dr. Susan Schroeder offers hair loss solutions for both men and women.
There are several different types of hair loss that can occur. The most common type, androgenetic alopecia or “male pattern baldness,” is what you most likely think of first when you think of hair loss. This is characterized by hair loss at the temples and also at the top of the scalp, and it is due to a testosterone byproduct called DHT. Women experience a similar hair loss with thinning most commonly at the crown of the scalp. In both cases, the hair follicles reduce in size and the growth phase of the hair cycle becomes shorter, resulting in thinner, shorter hairs, and reduced volume.
Additionally, hair loss can result from a number of underlying factors, such as low iron, vitamin D, or thyroid hormone levels; chemotherapy; infection; autoimmune conditions (alopecia areata, mechanical trauma); or from telogen effluvium, where hair follicles rapidly enter the shedding stage simultaneously, due to physical or psychological stress.
Historically, those afflicted with hair loss had few options when it came to correcting the problem. Recent modern advances in scalp and hair treatments provide more options than ever before for effectively halting hair loss and stimulating new hair growth. Dr. Schroeder will perform an in-depth examination and consultation to determine what is causing your hair loss, and may recommend one or more of the following options for you:
